Current Transformer
A Current Transformer (CT) is a type of transformer used to measure alternating current (AC) by stepping down high currents to a lower, measurable level. CTs are commonly used in electrical power systems for monitoring and protection purposes.
Applications
Used in conjunction with ammeters, energy meters, and power meters to measure AC current in power systems. Protection – Used with protective relays in substations to detect faults (overcurrent, short circuits) and trigger circuit breakers.
Construction
A single turn or a few turns connected in series with the main power line carrying the current to be measured. Magnetic Core Made of high-permeability laminated silicon steel or ferrite material to ensure efficient magnetic flux transfer.
